iPads will be given to all students in grades 9-12 in the 2012-2013 school year.
How much is the technology fee?
The technology fee will be between $275 and $300 annually per student. We will finalize that in the very near future.
What does the fee Cover?
The fee covers purchase of the iPad, a case, insurance and warranty for three years, apps for use in classes, and mobile device management of the device.
Why iPads? Why not Laptops?
- Light and Portable
- No moving parts
- Instant-on
- 10 hour battery life
- Secure from viruses
- Many many apps
- Costs of apps vs. computer programs
- Common Platform allows for greater use.
Can students use their own device?
Parents will have the option of purchasing their own device if they so desire. We will give specification soon as to whether the device must be an iPad, or iPad 2, or possibly iPad 3. Students using their own device will be required to have that device as part of the mobile device management system. This will allow the school to monitor certain aspects of the device, and send certain apps and security policies to the device. There will be a technology fee for those that use their own device, but it will be reduced to $75 to $100 annually per student. Parents will be responsible for all costs of repairing the device.
What if it breaks?
Insurances on school owned devices does coverage damage and theft. There is a $100 deductible. We will have spares for student to use at no cost if they are using school owned devices ($2 per school day if using personal devices).
Can I purchase the device at the end of the three years?
We are finalizing what will happen with the devices at the end of the three year lease. At this time we do not have a definite answer.
Will Internet Access be filtered?
We do have a content filter that blocks objectionable material. We will also have options to help you filter what is available at your home also. We are looking for an app that will handle that filtering at all times, but not interfere with our content filter here at school.
Will All Textbooks be on the iPad?
At this time, the number of textbooks available are limited. We anticipate that number to grow quickly, however we still expect to have some traditional textbooks for the next few years. Any books that are adopted on the iPad will undergo the same review process as our current curriculum.
